Tantra Massage: What Happens & What to Expect

If you’ve found yourself Googling “tantra massage” or perhaps asking Chat … chances are you’re curious about what actually happens behind the closed door. And you’re certainly not alone.

Search online and you’ll find everything from ancient tantric philosophy and spiritual practices through to sensual massage, erotic services and a whole lot of very different interpretations in between.

No wonder people are confused about what tantra massage actually is.

For me, Tantra has always been about something much bigger than simply receiving a massage.

It’s about slowing down… getting out of your head and back into your body. It’s about becoming more present and learning to notice sensation, breath, movement, arousal, connection and what happens when you stop trying to perform and simply allow yourself to feel.

And perhaps this is the part that often gets missed.

I find that Tantra can also be a beautiful doorway into intimacy coaching. Many people initially come looking for a tantra massage because they’re curious about the experience. But sometimes that curiosity reveals something deeper… difficulty relaxing and receiving, performance pressure, lack of confidence, feeling disconnected from their body, or simply wanting to experience intimacy differently.

So … what actually happens in a tantra massage? Is it sexual? What do you wear? Does it involve intimate touch? The list goes on.  It is a very common question … what is a tantra massage?

Let’s clear up some of the mystery.

What exactly happens in a tantra massage?

Tantra massage is quite different from a traditional massage.

Rather than simply working muscles and relieving physical tension, tantric massage can incorporate conscious touch, breath, movement, sound, stillness, energy awareness and a much greater focus on presence and sensation.

A session should begin with communication. Talk about boundaries, consent and what the particular person you’re seeing does and does not offer.

From there, the experience is generally slow and unhurried.

One of the biggest differences is that you’re encouraged to notice what you’re feeling, rather than disappearing into your head, worrying about how your body is responding, or searching for external stimulation to create arousal.

Instead, tantra invites you to become curious about the sensations already happening within your body… your breath, the touch, the movement, the subtle changes in arousal and pleasure.

For many people, particularly those who have become accustomed to relying heavily on visual stimulation, this can be a very different experience. You’re learning to feel rather than watch, think or perform.

For many people, that shift alone can be surprisingly powerful. When you stop monitoring what your body is doing or trying to make something happen, you begin to notice just how much sensation is actually available to you.

And this is where tantra starts to become much more than simply a massage. It can teach you a completely different way of experiencing pleasure, arousal and connection. And open you up to so much more!

Is tantra massage sexual?

This is probably one of the biggest questions people have.

Tantra acknowledges sexuality and arousal rather than pretending those parts of us don’t exist. But that doesn’t mean every tantra massage is full on sexual or that there’s a particular sexual outcome you’re supposed to achieve.

FYI different tantric professionals also work very differently. I know this firsthand. Some work predominantly with relaxation, energy and conscious touch. Others incorporate sensuality, arousal awareness or more intimate elements within clearly established boundaries. Then there are services advertised as tantra that have borrowed the name .. but Tantra itself seems to be missing in action.

That’s why it’s important to understand who you’re booking with and what they actually offer, rather than assuming every tantra massage is the same.

Does tantra massage involve intimate touch?

It can, sure … depending on the style of tantra being offered, the person providing it.

Many Tantra massages are primarily about you receiving, where you are there to relax and experience touch all over and become more aware of sensations. It doesn’t automatically mean there is mutual intimate touch, especially during a first session. But once again there are many different approaches and different people. Think less ‘menu of services’ and more slowing down, tuning in and discovering what your body can actually feel.

How long does a tantra massage take?

Tantra tends to benefit from time.

When you’re rushing, watching the clock or trying to get somewhere quickly, it’s difficult to settle into your body.

Personally, I have a little chuckle when someone asks for a half- hour Tantra massage. I’m barely getting started! My signature tantra experiences are a minimum of two hours because I like having enough time to have a brief talk, settle in and allow the experience to unfold without rushing. Other people offer different session lengths, styles and approaches.

How is tantra massage different from regular massage?

Traditional massage commonly has a physical objective… relaxing muscles, relieving tension, assisting recovery or simply helping you unwind. Definitely no genital touching.

Tantric massage can certainly be relaxing, but the intention can go much further.

You may be exploring your relationship with touch, receiving, sensation, arousal, breath, connection and your own body. And this is where my worlds of tantra and intimacy coaching began to overlap.

Tantra can be the beginning, not necessarily the destination

Over the years I’ve worked with many men who initially came to me because they were curious about tantra.

But underneath that curiosity there was often something else going on.

Performance pressure. Premature ejaculation. Difficulty maintaining an erection. Feeling disconnected from their body. Porn overstimulation. Difficulty receiving touch. Lack of confidence with a partner. Or simply wanting to become a more present, connected lover.

Tantra can give us an opportunity to slow everything down and start noticing what’s actually happening. Rather than focusing solely on erections, ejaculation or “doing sex properly,” we can begin exploring breath, movement, nervous-system regulation, arousal awareness, touch and the ability to stay present with pleasure.

That’s where tantra can become a really useful segue into intimacy coaching.

Sometimes the massage is the experience someone wanted.

Sometimes it’s the doorway to something they didn’t even realise they needed to learn.

Finding the right tantra experience

As my own work has evolved, I’ve also trained and worked alongside other people who bring their own experience, energy and approach to tantra.

And because lets face it … I’m only one woman … and I’m certainly not going to be the right fit for everybody. I am so passionate about Tantra that I’ve created a small directory through The Rebel Method.

It’s a place where you can explore different tantra offerings and find someone whose approach feels right for you.

Some people simply want to experience beautiful tantric bodywork.

Others are curious about learning more.

And some discover that tantra is only the beginning of a much bigger exploration of intimacy, connection and sexuality.

Hopefully this has cleared up some of the questions you may have had about Tantra massage. If you’d still like to know more you can head over the FAQ page where I answer plenty of the other common questions I get asked.
